Bereavement Support

You have heard that saying about taking a village to bring up a child; well it also takes that same village to support someone who is grieving. There are many community supports in York Region for individuals and families who are experiencing the loss of a loved one, and each organisation offers slightly different supports to best suit your needs.

  • 1:1 counselling
  • Group and peer support with individuals who are in a similar situation as yourself
  • Wellness programs which can include yoga and mindfulness for grief support
  • School programs for elementary and high school aged children, that can include art therapy, groups and individual or family support
  • Legacy work and memorial activities to honour your loved one.

MyGrief.ca is an online resource to help people move through their grief from the comfort of their own home, at their own pace. It can help you understand your grief and approach some of the most difficult questions that may arise. It was developed by people who have experienced the death of someone important to them and grief specialists. It complements existing community resources and helps address barriers to grief services. Many people working in healthcare use it as an education tool. It is also used by grief support groups and educators. The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer funded the vision and the original nine modules. Health Canada has funded the latest series of modules.

KidsGrief.ca can help you understand how children (ages 0 to 18) grieve and how to support them as they face the life-limiting illness, dying and death of someone important to them. It also suggests ways to introduce children to the cycle of life and death long before someone they know is dying or has died. KidsGrief.ca learning modules have been developed by a team of experts in grief, and specifically children’s grief, together with people who have experienced loss and supported children through grief. (see Who developed KidsGrief.ca – For Parents). It is not meant to replace professional counselling or other health care services.

Grief and Trauma Recovery

Unresolved Grief and Trauma are the number one reason people become ill.

Your biochemistry becomes affected; your entire system is compromised and over time begins to breakdown.

Grief is an appropriate, multi-faceted, emotion-based response to any form of loss.

Trauma can be anything from witnessing a horrific event to being emotionally neglected as a child, the latter being the most common form of trauma and least diagnosed. The important aspect of trauma is the imprint the trauma leaves inside of you.
